We Just Stumbled Our Way Into Black-Belt Class…
And Friday Night Was a Wake-Up Call
(In the most beautiful way possible)
Last week we did something very “us”: I saw the annual dojang sale, and said,
“You know what? We should go all-in.”
So we prepaid a full year of the optional Black-Belt Prep class that meets every Friday night.
No invitation..
Just four color belts deciding we were done taking the standard road, and ready to level up:
- Me → Blue belt
- Oldest son → Red/Blue
- Two younger boys → Red/White
Friday was our very first session.
We walked in, bowed, and lined up in the back row wearing our colored belts among twenty-something black belts who have been doing this for years.

Us, from behind — the back row feels a little different now.
Spoiler alert: We got absolutely cooked.
Here’s the honest play-by-play:
- The warm-up alone was longer and harder than most of our regular classes.
- The combinations were fast, long, and full of details we’ve never been taught yet.
- I got corrected on the same three things I always get corrected on… except this time it was in front of the entire black-belt line. Zero places to hide.
- We were sweaty, confused, sore, and happier than we’ve been in months.
We still have months of regular classes, cycles, pre-testing, and the actual test ahead of us.
We’re still very much color belts.
But we just paid for the privilege of training the way black belts train — every single Friday for the next year.
No shortcuts.
No special treatment.
Just the decision that if we want to earn those black belts together as a family, we need to start living like it now.
Friday night was humbling, exhausting, and one of the best investments we’ve ever made.
Here’s to the next 50 Fridays of getting our butts handed to us…
and loving every minute of it.
Tang Soo! 🥋💙

P.S. If you’ve ever paid extra to train above your rank, tell me I’m not crazy in the comments. My legs need the moral support. 😅
Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post, share it with a friend who needs a Friday-night kick in the butt (the good kind). 💙
