About CT Family Tang Soo Do Academy

Hi, I’m Jenn — a Connecticut mom, a Baptist Christian, and a Tang Soo Do mom who
never saw this coming.

My husband and I are raising four boys — ages 6, 10, 12, and 15 — in Litchfield
County, Connecticut. We homeschool all four of them, and a few years ago we were
looking for a physical activity that could work as part of our homeschool routine.
Something structured. Something that would build more than just fitness. A friend
mentioned Tang Soo Do and we decided to give it a try.

That decision changed us.

What started as a homeschool activity turned into something our boys genuinely love
— and something I ended up loving right alongside them. All four of my sons train.
And so do I. My husband cheers us on from the sidelines with genuine enthusiasm and
more patience than I deserve on the days I come home worn out and fired up at the
same time. He may not be on the mat, but he is absolutely part of this journey —
driving to practice, showing up to every belt test, and being the steady anchor that
makes all of it possible.

I started this blog because I couldn’t find the resource I was looking for when we
first started our martial arts journey. I wanted something written by a parent — not
a professional instructor writing for other instructors — that talked honestly about
what it’s actually like to train as a family. The early mornings. The belt tests. The
days when your child wants to quit and you have to figure out whether to push or give
grace. The moments when you watch your son bow onto the mat and you see someone you
are genuinely proud of.

Tang Soo Do has given our family so much more than self-defense skills. It has built
discipline, focus, and resilience in my boys in ways that carry into every area of
their lives. It has given me a shared pursuit with my sons that I never expected to
treasure as much as I do. And it has provided a framework of respect, character, and
honor that aligns beautifully with the values we are trying to build at home.

My Christian faith shapes how I see all of this. The virtues at the heart of Tang
Soo Do — discipline, respect, perseverance, humility — are virtues that matter deeply
to us as followers of Christ. Training on the mat is one more way we try to grow into
the people God made us to be. My boys are learning that on the floor of the dojang,
and I am learning it right there with them.

This blog is for families who are training, families who are considering starting,
and families who are somewhere in the middle — wondering if it’s worth the commitment
when life is already full. It is worth it. We are proof of that.

Welcome to CT Family Tang Soo Do Academy. Train hard. Stay humble. Keep going.
